Abstract
In the context of this work, selected refractory materials were examined in relation to their thermo-mechanical behaviour. The determination of the dependence of strength and modulus of elasticity on temperature and loading rate during deformation controlled crushing strength tests was a substantial component of the work. The primary focus was the design, manufacture and start-up of a new test facility for evaluation of the behaviour of lining segments under in-service conditions for the nonferrous industry. The capability of testing large refractory linings at temperatures up to 1500 °C, and by multidimensional load transmission, makes the equipment globally unique. With the results attained from different investigative procedures the technical designers can be supported in their planning activities and the stability of refractory linings improved. The results are to be used for finite element computations in future projects. Through the combination of the new refractory material testing method and finite element modelling, the analysis of deficiencies can be enhanced, thereby allowing for the subsequent introduction of preventative design measures.
