Abstract

This doctoral thesis deals with the development of Zn-Al-Mg-alloys for continuous hot dip galvanizing of hot rolled steel strip. The project partner was the company Wuppermann in Judenburg, Austria, a galvanizer of hot rolled steel strip for applications in the building industry. The first part of this work gives a detailed description of the production of different Zn-Al-Mg-coatings using the CVGL-process, whereby a high flexibility concerning the usage of different alloys was reached. Another focus lies on the characterization of microstructures of different coatings by means of the secondary electron microscope and microprobe. The main focus, however, was the investigation of the corrosion resistance of the Zn-Al-Mg-coatings. A quantification of the protective effects was carried out by salt spray test and potentiodynamic measurements. Furthermore, the influences of the corrosive attack on the microstructure were studied. To attain knowledge about the corrosion protection in agricultural areas, a new corrosion test was implemented. In the context of these investigations, the determining effect of the magnesium content on the corrosion resistance could be shown. Concerning this, a multiplication of the durability in the salt spray test could be demonstrated. Another work package of the thesis is the verification of the processability of Zn-Al-Mg-coated materials. For that purpose welding tests, attrition tests and the determination of friction coefficients were performed. Additionally, the applicability of the processability in in-house facility was proven.
