Abstract

The thesis presented discusses the production and characterisation of reactive solvents basing on amines and acrylates, the use of said solvents in varnish-recipes, the analysis of those varnishes and the interpretation of the results. The biggest fraction in a varnish system is often the solvent. Since the solvent easily evaporates into the atmosphere, the ecological aim should be to reduce the solvent fraction. Reactive solvents can substitute a part of the solvent and therefore reduce the volatile organic compounds. The progress of the synthesis of the reactive solvent is controlled by infrared spectroscopy (IR) and refractive index (RI) measurements. The reactive solvents are also tested with the following methods: Measurement of the primary, secondary and tertiary amine number as well as the total number of amines, the hydroxyl number, the dynamic viscosity and the colour number of resins according to Hazen. The varnish was produced by compounding 30% of reactive solvents with 100% of solid resin. The varnishes were characterised as follows: measurement of density, flow viscosity, non-adhesive time, non-volatile fraction, pendulum damping, solvent resistance, ultra violet condensation weathering device (UVCON); the reactive solvents also with size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy (LC/MS). The results of the analyses helped to develop a reactive solvent and varnish system respectively, which fulfilled the specified industrial requirements.
