Abstract
This thesis examines different possibilities to use mineral processing tailings for mine backfill purposes. The aim was to develop a cost-effective, backfill product meeting the requirements for the projected underground marble mine in Gummern. Prior to the test series, the properties of the used materials where characterized. Laboratory tests on a first series of 34 different backfill mixtures included moisture content, slump test and undrained shear strength using cone penetration tests. The subsequent series comprising of 13 and 10 mixtures were characterized by undrained shear strength, slump, moisture content and uniaxial compressive strength. Based on the previous results, five potential mixtures where selected for detailed analysis. The specimens were tested according to the series before and additionally triaxial compressive strength tests were carried out to obtain shear strength parameters. A recommendation for future mine backfill at the Gummern mine is made, based on the results of the tests combined with an economic calculation.
