Abstract

Based on a research of documented methods a new procedure for the quantitative determination of the composition of the concrete recipe using hardened concrete samples was tested. It is applicable to regular concretes with water/cement-ratios higher than 0,4. Besides the quantitative determination of the content of cement, water and aggregates additions such as aggregate powder, fly ash or pozzolana can be quantified. In this procedure the water content is determined following British Standard 1881 by measuring the chemically and physically bonded water in the concrete taking the content of the porosity due to artificial pore builders and compression into consideration. This method was tested on samples of hardened cement-lime and mortar. The maximum error of the measured water content was found to be less than 5 %. The cement content is calculated solving an over-determined system of equations based on the chemical balances. An evaluation program was developed containing an error calculation according to statistical principles. The quality of the estimation can be assessed in the evaluation program and improved if necessary. The method was tested on samples produced in the laboratory with 19 different concrete recipes. Due to the sample preparation method the concrete content of the samples could not be indicated with high accuracy. Therefore the error of the calculated cement content according to this method cannot be determined.
