Entwicklung eines Messverfahrens zur Bestimmung von Antioxidantien in Recyclingmaterial

Research output: Thesis › Master's Thesis

Abstract

The reutilization of used refractory materials as secondary raw material for the production of new refractory materials is limited because of the contained antioxidants like aluminium, silicium, magnesium and their compounds. A partial conversion of these antioxidants, as contained in MgO-C-bricks, to nitrides and carbides takes place during the operational use (converter, electric arc furnaces). In the case of reuse of this burst-material as secondary material, the metals and their compounds react with water leading to gas release, which can cause undesirable blowing appearance and can further lead to cracks in the shaping of new bricks. The aim of this thesis is to develop an analysis method that allows a quantitative determination of aluminium (Al), aluminium nitride (AlN) and aluminium carbide (Al4C3). The measurement principle is based on the development of gas during the decomposition of the compounds contained in the recycling material with water or sodium hydroxide solution. The selective detection and calculation of the quantitative amounts of Al, AlN and Al4C3 in the samples should enable an assessment of the reusability of the secondary material. The determination method consists of a combination of FTIR- and WLD-detectors. Based on tests with model mixtures of known composition, selected secondary materials are analysed and their suitability is evaluated for reuse in the production process at the end of the experimental series.
