Abstract

To cover the global need of copper especially for the electric industry, copper is extracted out of ore as well as out of “Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment” (WEEE). However, only 15-20 % of the global copper comes from recycled end-of-use objects and manufacturing wastes. The residual copper originates from new mine production in open pit mines and underground mines. Due to the low copper grade in those ores, their economic mining and further production is bound to the world-market price of copper. In comparison to that, more than half of the yearly copper produced out of ore is generated as WEEE, but only a small part of that are collected and properly recycled. Raising this percentage up to nearly 100 % is a huge challenge for the countries all over the world. Also, it provides a growing potential in the recovery of rare earth metals as well as in the recovery of precious metals and technology metals. WEEE contains a high content of organics, iron and steel and other metals as well as copper and precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum. Those can be separated and processed in different process steps. One of the commonly used plants in the process chain is the so-called TBRC (Top-Blown-Rotary-Converter). This furnace is well known in the non-ferrous metal industry and it can be charged with both, a liquid copper alloy or with electronic scarp. It is heated by a central burner an rotates along its longitudinal axis, to improve the movement of the bath. A cooled lance provides the process gases for refining and to separate the impurities of the copper alloy into the slag or the waste gases. The product of a TBRC is a row-copper alloy with a content of 99 % copper, a little amount of precious metals and some accompanying elements. The aim of this master thesis is the development of a concept for a copper-furnace and the construction of various assembly groups to a pre-defined level of detail. This furnace should combine the flexibility of a TBRC with some unique selling points, to achieve advantages over the competitors on the market.
