Entwicklung eines hydraulischen Modells für eine neuartige Gitterstrukturpackung

Research output: ThesisDoctoral Thesis

Abstract

A new grid-structured packing for mass transfer in packed columns combines the properties of dumped and structured packing. In order to describe the properties of the newly developed packing and their advantages and disadvantages as well as the ideal areas of application, detailed hydraulic as well as mass transfer measurements are necessary. For this purpose an experimental plant was installed at the Chair of Process Engineering of Industrial Environmental Protection at the Motanuniversitaet Leoben. To ensure a good rating of the newly developed packing for different application areas, a reliable forecast of the hydraulic properties has to be guaranteed. Therefore, the following models from literature have been examined on their ability to model the grid-structured packing: SRP-Model, Delft-Model, NNA-Model of Piché et al., Billet and Schultes-Model, Maćkowiak-Model and Stichlmair-Engel-Model. Unfortunately, none of them is able to calculate the hydraulic properties of the grid structured packing satisfactorily. Hydraulic modelling of the newly developed packing can be ensured by a physically justified modification of the Billet and Schultes-Model established in this work. Furthermore, this adjustment leads also to a better prediction of the hydraulic properties of further examined packing types.
