Abstract
In this degree dissertation a system concept was developed which enables the processing of thick-walled tubes and an additional pre-processing of the work piece blank, in order to increase the overall throughput of the production line. The currently installed separation technology is not able to process such tubes. In addition, in the case of these products, the run-times for finish machining on the lathe increases due to the larger volumes to be cut, whereas the effective run-time of the separation units decreases. This paper on the outset provides an insight into the voestalpine tubulars, especially in the area of the coupling production. The first production step in the coupling production, is that in which the work piece blank is cut to a specific dimension, for this reason all common pipe separation methods were compared (chip free cutting, laser cutting, water jet cutting, band saws, circular saws). No satisfactory result was achieved, for this reason; contact was then established with various companies that are specialised in special tube separation processes. Four distinct technologies were thereby discernible: pricking with a rotating tool, pricking with a rotating work piece, vortex milling and special circular saws. These technologies were then compared and evaluated in consultation with the operations manager. Two systems thereby particularly stood out: the Plantool and the Ringsaw. The next step was to find a suitable rough processing, which could to a given extent shorten the run-time required for the roughing of the coupling blanks. This was achieved with the Emag CNC twin-spindle lathe; furthermore, a cost effectiveness calculation thereof was prepared. In conclusion, a few design sketches were prepared in order to illustrate how one can incorporate these machines in the coupling production in order to increase productivity.
