Abstract

For dynamically loaded components in the chassis area forgings are usually made of the alloy EN AW 6082. This alloy has been established on the market due to its favorable combination of density, strength and corrosion resistance. As the requirements in the automotive sector with respect to strength and corrosion properties are constantly increasing, alternative alloys are needed. In this work the static and dynamic properties as well as the corrosion behavior were tested for different aluminum alloys. Moreover, different heat treatment strategies for each individual aluminum alloy have been applied. In addition to a static and dynamic material testing, the intergranular corrosion and stress corrosion cracking were tested. Based on these investigations, the alloy EN AW 6110 in T6 condition was identified as a promising material with early market readiness. The alloy EN AW 7050 in T6 condition was identified as a medium-term solution with a high level of lightweight construction potential at a slightly higher risk.
