Abstract

This diploma thesis deals with the effects of holes and bolt filled-holes on the strength and the fatigue behavior of two different carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy laminates with quasi-isotropic layup and with a layup of the type [50/40/10]. As part of a parametric study the influence of different influence factors such as drill (diamond and carbide drill), the nature of the hole (through boring or countersunk) and the quality of the drill using good and bad drilled specimens made of one laminate having the layup [50/40/10] was investigated. Based on these results filled hole-test under quasi-static and fatigue compression loads for both material system were conducted. Within the parametric study based on monotonous tests the results showed that both tensile and compression strength are not influenced by drill quality or the typ of drill. For specimens with countersunk joints in general lower values for the tensile and compression strength were obtained compared to the filled hole specimens. Whereas the open hole specimens gave higher tensile strength values than the filled hole specimens, the compression strength of specimens without bolts is lower than those with bolts. No significant differences in the fatigue behaviour of the investigated specimens with holes and bolt filled-holes could be found. For monotonic loading conditions, generally, slightly higher values were established for one prepreg material for both layup types. Only for quasi-isotropic specimens this result was not observed under compression loading. In good agreement with the monotonic tests this prepreg system showed a slightly better fatigue behavior.
