Abstract

This work aims to gain a better understanding on the influence of specific alloying elements on the wetting behavior. From this, conclusions can be drawn on the behavior during powder production and additive manufacturing. One of the most important influencing factors for successful powder production is the content of elements with a high affinity for oxygen. In the case of maraging steels, the titanium and aluminium contents in the alloy promote the freezing of the melt, since even the smallest amounts of oxygen react with the titanium and form titanium oxides. As part of this work, comprehensive drop shape analyses (DSA) were first carried out on different variations of maraging steels. Based on the results of the DSA and empirical values, three alloy variants were designed and manufactured on a large scale. These concepts were compared in terms of wetting behavior, mechanical properties, atomization process, and additive manufacturing. The results of the investigations carried out were able to show the influence of selected alloying elements on the wetting behaviour of the materials. These findings could also be observed in large-scale experiments. After the additive manufacturing, the three alloy variants were examined regarding their mechanical properties, with one variant emerging as the most promising. With a better understanding of the influence of selected alloying elements, the process stability in the production and processing of these materials can be significantly influenced.
