Crushing Plant Optimisation Using Total Cost of Ownership

Abstract
The total cost of ownership concept is being used more and more. TCO gives the possibility to compare both cost and profit for equipment, plants etc. A new TCO software module will be implemented into existing crushing and screening simulation software called Plant Designer. With the TCO-module it’s possible to optimise against profit. The objective of this report is to verify and to come up with a way of working with the TCO-module. The verification is done in cooperation with a Skanska owned crushing and screening plant called Vambosa. Vambosa is located in Blekinge, south east of Sweden. Tests in two sets where performed, first set to calibrate the model and second set to verify the optimisation result. When comparing the result from measured values and values from the simulation the deviation increases with size of fraction. For products above a particle size of 5 mm the deviation from measured values are within 10%. This can be explained with biased test samples, crushers not running optimised etc. For the fine material of particle size below 5 mm, the deviation is up to 30%. This big deviation indicates a failure in the calibration tool in the TCO-module. The Plant Designer calculation mode for production of fines has also to be checked. In this optimisation and total cost of ownership calculation only secondary, tertiary and quaternary crushers are in consideration. Quality of the end products and the yearly demand of the products are not taken in consideration. The gross profit generated from the original settings of the Vambosa plant compared to the settings generated from the TCO- module showed an increase of 11%. When using measured values from settings generated from the TCO-module to generate a gross profit and comparing it to origin gross profit an increase of 3% was discovered. The TCO-module can be treated as a product or a service. Sandvik personnel working with the module must be trained accordingly. In addition, more testing and verification of customer profit has to be conducted in order to set a price for this service or product, or to decide whether or not it should indeed be a necessary service or a product. Additional market investigation must be conducted in this case. This report will also give an introduction of the crushing and screening simulation software Plant Designer. It is necessary to comprehend this software because the TCO-module will be implemented in Plant Designer. A general explanation of what the concept total cost of ownership means is included. More detailed explanation how the TCO-module work in Plant Designer is shown in the report with inputs and outputs.
