Abstract

Providing lubrication in case of aluminium die forging is essential for the whole process. The friction conditions influence metal flow and load requirements. Lubricants for hot forming applications can be arranged into different categories. According to the process conditions the lubricant has to be chosen carefully. There are graphite lubricants and graphite free lubricants to name the most significant difference. Both are mixed with water. At the moment the use of existing and new lubricants depends on the forging experiments. These experiments lead to a certain mix ratio of the lubricant. The intention is a standardised and structured way of verifying the lubricating effect of forging lubricants. Ring compression tests and real forging experiments should be able to give detailed information about the common use of hot metal forming lubricants. Experiments were carried out with nine different lubricants. The experiments are also known as ring compression tests. The simulation of the ring compression tests is going to determine a friction coefficient. So it is possible to give each lubricant a corresponding friction coefficient. The forging tests carried out under real conditions help to extend the acknowlegdment from a simple test with the influence of operating conditions.
