Abstract

Bindered textiles for production of complex shaped or large scale preforms processed by liquid composite molding processes are playing an increasingly important role in the fiber composite industry. Opportunities but also challenges are addressed in this thesis. Individual aspects of the process chain for manufacturing composite parts were investigated in detail. The areas of binder application, preform production and preform impregnation were examined on the basis of selected examples. The methodology included process development for preform production, such as the construction and automation of an Automated Dry Fiber Placement (ADFP) system, as well as printing onto textiles using Fused Deposition Modeling 3D- printing technology. Based on preliminary work, filling and permeability tests were carried out to quantify the influence of the binder on preforms. In case of the ADFP preforms, the quality of the filling was visually inspected as well as evaluated using non-destructive analysis methods. The printed textiles, which were subsequently hot pressed into preforms and examined for their manipulated behavior, served as the basis for the development of a prediction model. This model is able to estimate the influence of the locally applied binder on the permeability behavior of the preform. In addition to these special methods, the influence of powder binder on the impregnation of preforms under near process conditions was investigated. Besides the massively different compaction behavior of bindered performs in comparison with unbindered preforms, additional investigations on the influence of the test fluid were carried out. The focus was on the chemo-rheological interactions due to wetting behavior, binder dissolubility and the associated change in viscosity. Based on these significant interactions, a method was developed to extract the resin after impregnation. Thus, the binder content in different segments of the preform could be determined and a distribution of the binder could be visualized. This contributes to an improved understanding of the effect of binders in processing.
