Abstract

The first subject of investigation in this Thesis is the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) itself. The quantities of treated WEEE, composition and content of the appliances and their components are examined with regard to both their hazard and resource potential. Subsequently, the legal background for the treatment of WEEE is presented. WEEE does not only underlie legal rule by the Federal Waste Management Act or the Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment Ordinance but also several other ordinances, the regulations of which regarding WEEE are shortly illustrated. The state of the art of WEEE treatment in Austria is presented. The ways of treatment according to the Austrian waste treatment hierarchy, namely waste avoidance, preparation for re-use, recycling, thermal treatment and disposal are each looked at individually. The WEEE treatment facility of Saubermacher Dienstleistungs AG in Unterpremstätten is introduced as well. Finally, the material flows of the Unterpremstätten facility are quantified and evaluated via material flow analysis. The sampling, sorting and laboratory analyses that are necessary for the mass balance and the laying out of the results using the material flow analysis software STAN are the final parts of this Thesis.
