Abstract

This master's thesis describes the possibilities of facilitating work and increasing efficiency through the use of automation technology. Specifically, it focuses on the automation of die changing of a forging press at voestalpine Railway Systems. After a comprehensive theoretical description of forming and automation technology as well as Industry 4.0, the implementation of automation takes place. In the practical part of this work, the forging process and the associated die changing are discussed first. Following this, various automation possibilities are presented. Based on a utility analysis combined with comparison of pairs, these automation options are then compared to identify the most suitable variant. Subsequently, the design and construction of the selected concept is then described in detail. To optimize the process, the subprocesses are evaluated and depicted in a flowchart to define the exact sequence of automation and determine additional characteristic values. Then, the networking and communication between the automation technology components is described. In accordance with the automation pyramid, the necessary hard- and software is selected for each level to ensure that all components communicate and harmonize with each other and the automation is fully covered. Finally, the results and impacts of the automation are discussed.
