Magnetic scrap metal, which is generated within the mechanical treatment of municipal solid waste, lately creates huge problems. A deciding factor is the interface between the operators of the mechanical treatment plant and the connected shredder plant next in line. For this reason the present thesis exemplifies advancing the situation via implementation of an intermediate step. Thus it was necessary to describe the basics such as composition, quantities and recovery ways in Austria. According to this it was possible to define technical and economic demands to realise the suggested intermediate processing step. The last part of the thesis finally includes a number of introductions for all parties involved, which would improve the handling of magnetic scrap.
