Abstract

Together with the company Tribotecc, this work represents the continuation to the construction of a test stand for the removal of mercury from petroleum based on the master thesis of Mario Rokita from 2021. This is intended to enable a standardized test method for evaluating the Hg0 removal performance of different metal sulfide powders. The work is divided into a topic-specific elaboration of the theoretical fundamentals, followed by an analysis of the preliminary work carried out to date. This is followed by the actual powder sampling in the laboratory, in order to obtain a representative methodology for metal sulfide powder characterization with regard to Hg deposition efficiency, while continuously optimizing the process. n-Hexane at a temperature of 15 °C is used as the model substance for petroleum. The continuously improved experimental procedure includes saturation, sorption, stabilization and solid/liquid separation. To avoid limitation by transport processes, a steady suspension of the metal sulfide powders in the Hg0-saturated n-hexane solution is forced using overhead shakers. The samples are stabilized by a potassium bromate and bromide solution for storage and transport for analysis. By continuously optimizing the experimental procedure, metal sulfide powders can be reproducibly characterized according to their Hg removal efficiency.
