Abstract

Because of the tightening of environmental regulations and the increasing costs for landfill the research work for processing of residues from ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy has been stepped up. Waste material in landfills has to follow special environmental laws and so the higher its volume and extractability is, the higher are the costs for landfilling. The amount of residual material like dust or slag can be minimized by either system improvements or reconditioning of the material in order to recover precious elements like zinc. At the same time an inert landfill material can be produced. The Waelz process is designed for treating electric arc furnace dust in order to recover the zinc contained in it. A disadvantage is, that a lot of slag with leachable heavy metals is produced, that has to be landfilled. One opportunity is a remelting process in a converter. Due to high temperatures of about 1400 °C in the TBRC (Top Blown Rotary Converter) zinc and heavy metals like lead and compounds of them will be removed and carried out by the exhaust gas. The existing slag effects a silica coating and thereby an inertisation of the heavy metals. An inert slag is very important because ecological menace elements like lead cant be leached out and contaminate underground water if the slag is reused for road constructions or in the cement industry. The great carbon content of retort residues from the New Jersey process serves as a reducing agent and energy source in the TBRC. With this process the landfill volume can be reduced and the leachability of environmental hazardous elements decreases whereby lower costs occur. This new idea of remelting slag with retort residues in a TBRC for reducing volume and volatilize elements is regarded here. Several trials build the fundament for the discussion of the test results. In addition to this the formation of the residues and the leachability of different elements in the slag are described.
