In todays globalized society the geographical origin of food has gained importance. For various reasons, more and more consumers prefer local products with a defined geographical origin. Producers also advertise the geographical origin and are trying to increase the value of their products by praising the quality of their products through a geographical designation. Unfortunately, there is an increases of abuse in these products, which also comprise the "Styrian pumpkin seed oil PGI" with falsely declared geographical origin. The demand for an analytical approach how to counteract the falsification of origin of Styrian pumpkin seed oil, has increased dramatically. The aim of this work was to develop an analytical method to assure the geographical origin of Styrian pumpkin seed oil, a traditional Austrian speciality (Bandoniene et al., 2013; Joebstl et al., 2010; Meisel and Bandoniene, 2007). An important factor in the development of the method was the automated measure-ment procedure of trace elements in particular the SEE, which occur in pumpkin seed oils at ultra-trace level content. Over three years the relevant factors that influence the correct determination of the origin were studied. It was found that the method based on trace element measurement to determine the origin of pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil is suitable and sufficient. The classification models to identify the geographic origin were established in this study for seeds and oil. They are either used for the control of the seeds delivered to the oil mill, or to classify the seeds directly at the farm. The data, for the models were collected over several years and the efficiency of the method is confirmed by statistical analysis. Classification models based on pressed pumpkin seed oils, was successfully applied during a market study in 2012 organised by the Consumer Advo-cacy Group in Austria (VKI). The result of this study of the geographical origin of commercially available pumpkinseed oils was in contradiction to the geographic origin proclaimed by the producers.
