Abstract

This master thesis deals with the development of a concept for reclaiming process water out of the tailings of a density separation plant. The tailings fed to the separation plant were sampled in reference to the ore type. The volumetric flow rates, solid contents, mineral assemblage and distributions of mineral phases were analysed. The properties concerning the settling characteristics with or without the use of flocculants were determined using cylinder tests. Based on this data a layout design for a potential thickener was carried out. The impact on the dense media separation and the downstream flotation plant by the use of flocclants were also investigated. The laboratory tests confirmed that there is no severe impact regarding these processes. Concepts for the construction of a potential thickener in the existing plant and the implementation into the separation process were developed. Investment and operating costs were estimated.
