Abstract

Injection moulding is one of the most important methods for rubber part production due to its good usability for products in large numbers. In rubber injection moulding the vulcanization, a crosslinking of the molecular chains, which is very sensitive to temperature fluctuations, is added as a special characteristic in contrast to thermoplastic moulding. The combined complexity of the process and material fluctuations require the introduction of optimisation systems. In this work, the influences of the automation and optimization software Cure²® are investigated. After an extensive literature research experiments were made on an injection moulding machine equipped with the software Cure²®. On the one hand the responds of the system to an initiated error on the other hand the influence of batch variations on the injection moulding process were tested. Finally the optimization mode had been investigated. The initiated error was induced by omitting a cleaning interval resulting in a pressure increase during the injection cycle. It was found out, that the system couldn't compensate the introduced error, as vulcanized particles cause defects in the structure of the moulded parts and decrease in particular the tensile strength. The aging of the rubber compound resulted in the consumption of inhibitors causing a reduction of the incubation period. Feeding new rheometer curves of the aged material caused a 4 % per shot decrease of the cure time without affecting the part quality. The batch variations could be fairly well controlled by the automation software and a constant part quality was achieved even with a cure time reduction up to 10 % per cycle by minimizing the safety margins. In order to evaluate the optimization measures, at first individual parameters were varied and then a combined parameter set was changed. It was shown that changing the individual parameters is less effective than changing a combined set of parameters.
