Abstract

The additive manufacturing methods provide a basic concept to develop new products. This technology permit the manufacturing of complex prototypes consisting of various materials with the layer-by-layer building process. In the present work the procedural principle of the direct metal laser melting process regarding the manufacturing of metalforming tools were analysed. In addition the manufacturing and the properties of the raw material, the metal powder, were analysed and shortly discussed. A further topic was, based on the gained knowledge, to define a short construction guideline especially for SLM parts. Next step after the theoretical study and discussion was to develop a metalforming tool for toothed rings by help of a numerical simulation software. A basic element of the simulation model was the adaptation of the thread rolling process to the extrusion process. In addition to the numeric simulation the developed extrusion die were manufactured by the EOSint M280. The results, out of the practical trials, were analysed and compared with the simulation results. Aim of the present work was the successful use of the SLM technology for metalforming tasks, especially for the development and manufacturing of an extrusion die for toothed rings.
