Abstract

In the first part of the study, experimental investigations were carried out to determine whether column flotation is an effective method for reducing the silicate content in the ore from the Styrian Erzberg. The experiments were conducted using a column flotation cell constructed in-house at the institute. This cell was adapted for measurement purposes, and the results obtained were compared with those from commercially available laboratory equipment. To obtain a smeltable product, systematic agglomeration tests were subsequently conducted with the flotation concentrate. A laboratory-scale experimental procedure was developed for producing reproducible pellets. Due to the requirements of subsequent experimental techniques, the target size for the pellets ranged from one to six millimeters. In addition to pellets made from pure flotation tailings, it was investigated whether the addition of oxidized ore concentrates, in addition to reducing the silicate content and increasing the iron content, also had a favorable effect on pellet strength. Pneumatic flotation was able to confirm the results of mechanical flotation but did not significantly improve them. The dry strength of the pure concentrate pellets exceeded that of the mixed pellets by approximately 15% when Ca(OH)2 was used as a binder.
