Abstract
The proper handling of excavated material is becoming increasingly important in planning and execution of tunnel projects. In order to create an economically and ecologically sustainable construction method, recycling of the material either within the project or in external applications is aimed at. Numerous standards, recommendations and research papers describe many potential uses for the excavated material. Depending on the intended usage, it must fulfill different requirements regarding its chemical and mineralogical composition as well as various technical parameters. In addition, legal aspects play a decisive role. The primary objective of this diploma thesis is the collection of existing applications and the respective relevant material properties. The analytical model for estimating the recyclability of excavated tunnel material, which is created in the program Microsoft Excel, is based on the requirements evaluated from these data. By entering chemical, mineralogical and technical parameters of the ground as well as specific information about the tunnel project itself, potential applications can be evaluated. Finally, this model is applied to the new particle accelerator at CERN in Geneva, which is currently at planning stage. Based on geological data from explorations, the usability of excavated material for the 100-kilometer-long circular tunnel is estimated. As a result of the analytical analysis, the sandstones can be used as subsoil backfill and agricultural recultivation layer. The investigated technical parameters of the marls, siltstones and claystones also allow this application. In addition, other ways of utilization seem possible, although some missing, existentially important parameters call this into question.
