Abstract
A belt conveyor with a width of 450mm was deflected 90 degrees by means of two cylindrical deflection units axial parallel arranged one on top of the other. The installed conveyor belt was a standard product with textile plies. The test stand was horizontal arranged and compressed air was used as fluidizing gas. The link between the internal pressure of the compressed air in the deflection units and important operational dates like required driving power were investigated. Further more the following main operational dates were measured and recorded. ·Required air pressure in the deflection unit ·Belt tension forces ·Compressed air consumption ·Belt speed By the addition of water between the belt and the surface of the deflection unit a reasonable reduction of the compressed air consumption was detected. Belt conveyor systems equipped with the tested deflection unit will be mainly installed in underground mines because it leads to a reduction of the heading length for belt conveyor systems with belt storage. The design of the conveyor deflection system is characterized by high operation availability and economical yield. The carried out tests have shown, that the power requirement of a conveyor unit equipped with a deflection unit is just 5% higher than the power requirement of a straight system without direction changes. During the test runs, noise level measurements have been executed and the detected noise level of up to 108 dB (A) demonstrated, that the deflection station has to be sufficient incased. For the safe operation of a conveyor system equipped with the deflection system it is very important to prevent any mechanical contact between the belt creep and the surface of the cylinder of the deflection unit.
