N2 - Coal mining is the extraction or removal of coal from the earth by mining. Surface mining and underground mining are the two basic methods of mining. Underground mining methods currently accounts for about 60% of world coal production. In underground coal mining, there are two common mining methods used. The two methods are “Drill and Blast”, also called “Conventional mining”, and “Mechanical cutting”, also called “Mechanized mining”. This report gives a basic description of the commonly used mechanical cutting methods and the available equipment with the corresponding advantages and disadvantages is described. Furthermore the report will give a basic knowledge of underground coal mining and how a choice of mining method and mining equipment is made. The challenge for each mine engineer is to find the best mining method and equipment solution according to the local mine condition and the mine needs. The report summarizes the basic knowledge of underground coal mining, which aims at Sales Managers, Product Line Managers and for training of new employees to enable them to support the customer and for better understanding of the customer needs.
