Possibilities for utilization and recycling of excavated material in Hämmerlein-Tellerhäuser deposit

Abstract

The objective of this Master Thesis is to find the utilization solutions for excavated material generated by the development of ore deposit in the Erzgebirge region, Germany. The excavated material could be repurposed as aggregate for construction, or could be returned under the surface, which can reduce the negative environmental and social impacts in the required areas. This study also includes a compilation of the most relevant legal aspects, DINs, and regulations regarding the further use of excavated material in construction sector. We conduct experiments on gneiss and garnet-skarn samples from the excavated material in the Hämmerlein deposit to describe the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of those rocks. Experiments include - the Point Load Test (PLT), the LCPC test, the Los Angeles (LA) test, and density. The chemical analysis of rock samples, and the Quantitative Microstructural Analysis (QMA) are conducted in TU Bergakademie Freiberg (TU BAF). Due to the presence of heavy metals in the excavated material, the research focuses on the legal and environmental aspects. The results support the possible use of excavated material from the Hämmerlein as aggregate for producing concrete, in bituminous mixtures, and as backfilling material. Because the excavated material from the Hämmerlein does not fulfill the chemical limits of concentrations, it cannot be utilized in the recycling of mineral residues/wastes and as rocks for gabion construction.
