Abstract

Hauling ore is an important aspect of the underground mining process that is often taken for granted until something goes wrong. Similar to any piece of mining equipment, the more consistently underground mine trucks run, the more they produce. When availability diminishes or they go down unexpectedly, which seems to happen at the worst possible time and location, mine production takes a big hit [1]. That is why, this report focuses on performance, suitability and productivity of the increasing number of large underground mine trucks coupled with technical and environmental concerns affecting underground mine haulage system such as tramming distances, ramp gradients and tire life. Furthermore, The study looked on some commonly used underground haulage systems, highlighting examples of common used haulage system and considering advantages and disadvantages associated with each method looking at mining trends and future mining challenges associated with each haulage method making particular reference to truck haulage system. The thesis further studied on the current and future trends with regards to underground mining large trucks business, reviewing future metal and mineral consumption and the market drivers associated with these trends. Competitor comparisons were made to compare the main differences, advantages and disadvantages of equipment models which competitors have offered as compared to what Sandvik is currently offering in the underground mine truck business. The benefit is to weigh the strengths and weaknesses of underground truck manufacturers so as to ascertain potential future market sales, future development focus areas to guarantee future underground large trucks haulage method and also to get a customer view on future development and customer needs. The results of this study must help Sandvik to focus on improving on the future of large underground mine trucks business.
