title = "Compressive creep testing of carbon containing materials under reducing atmosphere",
abstract = "In service carbon containing materials may show creep under thermomechanical loading. This research aims at developing a testing setup to prevent the high temperature oxidation of carbon containing materials during creep testing in the laboratory, and investigating the compressive creep behavior of various carbon containing refractory materials. The designed testing setup mainly comprises one external corundum tube for containing coke with four holes and one inner corundum tube to prevent the contact of coke with the piston. Additional support components are needed to prevent the contact of coke with the arms of extensometers. With sufficient coke content in the tube, the high temperature oxidation of carbon containing materials is prevented. Four MgO-C refractory materials with different compositions were studied, two of which consisted of antioxidants and the other two did not apply antioxidants. The creep resistance decrease with respect to the testing temperature. Among these four materials, the pitch bonded magnesia material with 10% carbon, Al-Mg and B4C showed the lowest creep deformation under all the experimental conditions. In the cases of two MgO-C materials with 16% carbon, the material without antioxidant showed better creep resistance than the material with Al as antioxidant. Inverse estimation was performed for the tar bonded material and good agreement between experimental curves and predicted curves was achieved.",
